HVAC Repair: Bryant Central AC System with Plenum and Duct Repairs

When a homeowner in Las Vegas noticed weak airflow and poor cooling, Fast Affordable Air was called in to take a closer look. The home was running a Bryant central AC system with an attic furnace and outdoor condenser unit, and we quickly saw several signs of wear that needed attention.

Step 1: Attic Furnace and Plenum Inspection

Our first step was to inspect the attic-mounted furnace. The Bryant gas furnace was connected to a large, foil-insulated plenum — this is the metal box that directs air into the duct system. We noticed indentations in the plenum panels, which can be caused by negative pressure or improper support. While this wasn’t a full breach, any physical weakness in the plenum can lead to energy loss over time.

We also inspected the vent pipe and combustion exhaust system, which were intact and properly pitched to allow for safe removal of combustion gases.

Step 2: Sealing Leaky Ductwork

We opened the return grille inside the house and found gaps in the sheet metal transitions. These small openings may seem harmless, but they pull in unfiltered attic air and reduce system performance. Using HVAC-grade mastic sealant, we sealed every gap to ensure clean, conditioned air was delivered efficiently.

We also replaced damaged or warped sheet metal sections near the duct collar connection. This ensures the air flows smoothly without hitting rough edges or being lost to the attic.

Step 3: Outdoor Condenser Service

Next, we moved outside to service the outdoor condensing unit. The condenser fan was running, but the system showed signs of wear and dirt buildup. We used a coil-safe cleaner and hose rinse to clean out the condenser fins, which allows the unit to release heat faster and cool the home more effectively.

We also checked the refrigerant line insulation and the electrical whip (the conduit that brings power to the unit). Everything was re-secured and reconnected to code.

Benefits of This Repair

  • Improved airflow by sealing air leaks in the return duct.
  • Better energy efficiency thanks to a clean condenser coil and repaired ductwork.
  • Extended system life from proper venting and reinforced plenum support.
  • More comfortable rooms with faster cooling and balanced temperatures.

This Bryant system is now operating more efficiently and safely, helping the homeowner stay cool through the Las Vegas summer. Every part of this system — from the attic ductwork to the outdoor condenser — was carefully inspected and restored.
