Keeping Cool From the Rooftop: Armstrong Central AC Repair in Las Vegas

Fast Affordable Air recently completed a rooftop air conditioning repair on an Armstrong central AC system serving a home in Las Vegas. Rooftop HVAC units are very common in Southern Nevada because they save space, keep the system away from ground-level dust, and make ductwork installation easier. However, being exposed to sun, wind, and rain means they need regular service to keep them working properly.

Inspection of the Rooftop Unit

Our team began by performing a visual inspection of the packaged heating and cooling system. A packaged unit combines the evaporator coil, condenser coil, and blower motor in one cabinet that sits on the roof. This is different from a split system, where part of the system is outside and part is inside. We checked wiring connections, panels, and duct seals for signs of damage. In these photos, you can see the cabinet open with wiring exposed as part of the diagnostic process.

Electrical and Capacitor Check

One of the first steps was checking the electrical components. The outdoor disconnect box, which is the safety shutoff switch for the unit, was inspected. Inside, we tested capacitors—these are small electrical devices that help motors start and run smoothly. When capacitors weaken, motors struggle, which can cause poor cooling and higher electric bills. We measured capacitance using a meter and compared the readings to the manufacturer’s rating.

Drainage and Roofing Seals

Another important step was checking the condensate drainage. When air conditioning runs, it removes moisture from the air, which collects as water. That water needs a drain line to safely leave the unit. If the drain clogs, water can back up into the system or leak onto the roof. We made sure the PVC drain lines were clear and properly sealed where they connect to the roof.

Duct and Roof Transitions

The photos also show the connection between the unit and the roof ductwork. This area is sealed with mastic and roofing material to prevent air leaks and water entry. Over time, seals can crack from sun exposure. We inspected and resealed areas to ensure the conditioned air goes into the home and not outside. Proper sealing helps improve energy efficiency and keeps cooling costs lower for the homeowner.

Performance Benefits

After completing the electrical, mechanical, and duct inspections, we restored the system to normal operation. The benefits of this type of service include:

  • Improved cooling performance – The AC can reach the desired temperature faster.
  • Lower energy bills – A tuned-up HVAC system uses less electricity.
  • Longer equipment life – Regular maintenance prevents major breakdowns.
  • Better indoor comfort – Even airflow and consistent cooling throughout the home.
