Restoring Cool Comfort: Attic HVAC Repair and Dual Outdoor Condenser Service in Las Vegas

At Fast Affordable Air, we were recently called out to inspect and repair a central air conditioning system in a Las Vegas home. The system included two outdoor condenser units and a complex attic duct layout tied to an air handler.

🔍 Initial Diagnosis

Upon arrival, we accessed the attic system through a tight ceiling hatch above the client’s closet (see image 4). Using a telescoping ladder, we carefully entered the attic and immediately noticed several potential concerns:

  • Heavy dust accumulation on the flexible ductwork (image 10)
  • Old duct tape repairs beginning to loosen
  • Discoloration and leakage stains on the supply plenum connections (image 6)
  • PVC condensate drain not fully supported (image 5)

Down below, outside the home, the dual central air conditioner condensers (image 2 and image 8) were showing signs of age. While the units were still operational, their airflow was partially restricted due to debris buildup and general wear. We marked the potential area for new conduit placement (image 7) in case of future upgrades or a system split.

🧰 Step-by-Step Repair Procedure

1. Safety First

We shut off power using the outdoor disconnect switches located above the condensers (image 2). Safety is always our first priority, especially when working in tight attic spaces and around electrical lines.

2. Duct Sealing and Reinforcement

Inside the attic, we inspected and reinforced duct-to-plenum connections using mastic and proper foil tape (image 6). The previous tape was degraded and allowed minor air leaks. We re-sealed the connections and reinforced the hanging straps holding the main trunk line (image 10).

3. Drainage and Access Panel Maintenance

The attic air handler (image 5 and image 11) had a PVC condensate line for water drainage. We secured the pipe with added support and cleared minor obstructions. The access panel was also re-secured with all screws properly reinstalled to prevent vibration and future loosening.

4. Outdoor Condenser Check

We cleaned around the dual outdoor condensers (image 2 and image 9), cleared away vegetation, and ensured both units had adequate clearance for airflow. The electrical whips and disconnects were intact, and refrigerant lines appeared well insulated with no visual cracking.

✨ Why This Work Matters

Proper duct sealing and air handler maintenance are essential for efficiency and comfort. Leaky ducts can waste up to 30% of cooled air, according to Energy.gov. Re-sealing these joints not only boosts cooling performance, it also reduces strain on the system and lowers monthly energy bills.

The condensers outside were still functional but clearly aged. By performing proactive cleaning and inspection, we helped extend their life and prevented potential failure during the peak summer heat in Clark County.
