Rooftop AC Repair on a Rheem Classic System in Las Vegas

One of our latest service calls in Las Vegas involved diagnosing and repairing a rooftop Rheem Classic central air conditioning unit that wasn’t cooling properly. The homeowner noticed uneven temperatures and reduced airflow inside the house. Once we arrived onsite, we got to work with a complete inspection and electrical diagnostics.

Inspection and Diagnosis

First, we tested the system’s electrical components using a Fieldpiece SC260 clamp multimeter. This tool helps us check for amperage, voltage, and continuity in HVAC systems. We found the compressor was pulling only 8.28 amps—significantly lower than normal for startup. That told us the issue might be linked to a faulty capacitor or restriction in electrical flow.

Component Check – Dual Run Capacitor

We opened the access panel and inspected the dual run capacitor. This particular unit used a CSC 45+5 μF 370VAC capacitor, responsible for providing a quick jolt of power to start the compressor and the fan motor. When capacitors wear down, your AC might hum or blow warm air but won’t start properly.

In this case, the capacitor was old and covered in dust, and it was no longer holding proper charge. That explained the weak amp draw and inconsistent performance.

Air Filter and Airflow Issues

Inside the home, we checked the return grille and discovered a heavily clogged air filter—completely saturated with dust and moisture. A blocked filter can choke off airflow, strain the blower motor, and reduce cooling efficiency. We replaced the filter with a fresh one to restore clean airflow.

System Performance and Outdoor Unit Cleaning

We also inspected the outdoor coil on the rooftop unit. Dirt buildup on the coil can prevent the AC from releasing heat effectively, which forces the compressor to work harder. While no extreme buildup was seen, we reminded the customer that rooftop units should be cleaned with water only, as noted on the unit’s label.

The Rheem Classic rooftop system is a reliable package unit, but like all HVAC systems in Las Vegas, it endures tough desert conditions. Routine maintenance and timely part replacement are critical to ensure peak performance, especially during the hot months.

Final Test and Operation

After replacing the capacitor and air filter, we tested the system again. The amp draw improved, cooling was restored, and the indoor temperature stabilized quickly. Our client noticed better airflow and quieter operation right away.

This repair highlights why regular tune-ups and quick responses to weak cooling signs can prevent breakdowns and save money on energy bills. To learn more about rooftop HVAC system maintenance or capacitor issues, check out Fast Affordable Air’s AC repair page.
