Rooftop Air Conditioning Repair and Diagnostic in Las Vegas

When temperatures rise in Las Vegas, a reliable central air conditioning system becomes more than a comfort—it’s a necessity. Our team at Fast Affordable Air recently serviced a rooftop HVAC package unit that had stopped cooling efficiently. The system was located on a shingle rooftop, typical for commercial and multi-family properties throughout Clark County.

Initial Inspection and Safety Setup

Before opening the panel, we began with a visual inspection of the rooftop unit. The system housing showed signs of normal wear, and the access panel revealed the internal components: the compressor, condenser coil, control board, and electrical section. We connected our manifold gauge set—the red, blue, and yellow hoses—to measure refrigerant pressures accurately.

The gauge readings help us determine if the refrigerant charge is within normal operating range. In this case, our gauge manifold showed consistent pressure levels, confirming the system still held its charge. If the pressures had been unusually low, that could have pointed to a refrigerant leak or restriction.

Electrical Diagnostics

With the power safely disconnected using the rooftop disconnect box, we inspected the electrical compartment. The system featured a dual-run capacitor (responsible for starting both the fan motor and compressor) and a contactor that controls high-voltage flow to the compressor circuit.

Using our UEi G2 Phoenix multimeter, we measured 223.4 volts across the power lines. This confirms proper voltage supply—well within the expected range for a 240V-rated rooftop unit. An insufficient voltage could cause the compressor or blower motor to struggle, leading to poor cooling performance or even component damage.

Refrigerant and System Performance Testing

Next, we ran the unit to monitor refrigerant behavior under load. By connecting the gauges, we read both high-side (red hose) and low-side (blue hose) pressures. These readings help determine the cooling cycle’s efficiency and whether the expansion device (a metering component that controls refrigerant flow) is working properly.

Proper refrigerant levels ensure the air conditioner maintains the correct balance between pressure and temperature. Too much or too little refrigerant can cause issues like warm air output, freezing evaporator coils, or compressor failure. After checking pressures and temperatures, we confirmed the system was cycling correctly and removing heat efficiently.

Cleaning and Component Check

While the panels were open, we also performed a light coil inspection and verified airflow through the condenser coil. Dirt and debris can trap heat and reduce efficiency, so a clean coil is vital for performance. We also checked for any corroded copper lines or signs of oil leakage around the compressor and refrigerant joints.

Result and Benefits

After all readings and tests were confirmed, the rooftop unit resumed normal operation. The cooling output returned to optimal levels, and the electrical readings were stable. The customer immediately noticed improved airflow and faster temperature recovery indoors.
