Rooftop Air Conditioning Repair: Replacing a Failing Condenser Fan Motor

Step 1: Diagnosing the Problem

Step 3: Installing the New TradePro Motor

For this replacement, we used a TradePro TP-025-1SP2 motor, which is a high-efficiency, single-phase condenser fan motor designed for outdoor use. This motor operates at 1/4 horsepower and is rated for 208–230 volts, making it a perfect match for this system. It’s also thermally protected, meaning it will automatically shut off if it ever overheats — a crucial safety feature in the Las Vegas heat.

After securing the new motor to the fan guard and reconnecting the wiring (yellow to capacitor, brown to C, and black to line), we double-checked rotation direction. The new motor includes a rotation-reversal option to ensure the fan pushes air upward and away from the condenser coil as designed.

Step 4: Testing and Temperature Check

Once the new motor was installed and all electrical connections were tightened, we restored power and ran the system. The fan started smoothly with no wobble or noise, and airflow over the condenser was strong and consistent.

We then used an infrared thermometer to check the temperature around the fan exhaust. The reading showed approximately 66°F, confirming that the new motor was efficiently helping the system release heat. The compressor pressures stabilized, and the system returned to normal cooling operation. This ensures lower energy consumption and longer equipment lifespan.

Step 5: Final Checks and Maintenance Tips

After confirming proper operation, we inspected all rooftop electrical components, sealed wiring connections, and cleaned around the condenser. Regular maintenance can prevent this type of failure. Simple actions like rinsing off condenser coils, checking capacitors, and lubricating fan bearings can make a huge difference, especially in dusty climates like Southern Nevada.
