At Fast Affordable Air, our team was recently called out to service a rooftop central air conditioning unit in Las Vegas. The system was showing signs of reduced cooling and unusual noise during operation. This home uses a rooftop package unit—a type of HVAC system that combines heating and cooling components into one cabinet mounted on the roof.
System Inspection
Upon arrival, we performed a complete inspection of the unit’s exterior and electrical connections. The cabinet and rooftop frame were secure, but the blower assembly inside showed signs of dust accumulation and aging motor components. We also noted visible air leaks around the internal insulation and duct transitions.
Blower Compartment and Motor Diagnostics
After opening the service panel, we examined the blower wheel and motor wiring. The blower is the component that pushes air through the ducts. Over time, dust buildup or worn bearings can cause noisy or inefficient operation. Using a multimeter, we verified that the motor’s power draw was within a safe range, and inspected the capacitor that helps it start and run efficiently.
In this case, the internal blower wheel and housing were cleaned, and loose wiring connections were secured. Proper electrical connections are essential for safe and reliable operation, especially under the high summer heat in Clark County.
Duct and Airflow Improvements
We inspected the transition duct connected to the unit, which had visible wear on the insulation. To prevent energy loss, we resealed joints using HVAC-grade mastic and foil tape. This prevents air leaks, ensuring that all cooled air is delivered directly into the living spaces instead of escaping through cracks in the ductwork.
We also checked the rooftop electrical disconnect box and drain line. Proper condensate drainage helps prevent water buildup inside the system and protects both the roof and insulation from moisture damage.
Cooling Performance
After reassembly, the air conditioner was tested for normal operation. The fan motor started smoothly, and the airflow through the supply duct was steady and strong. The system’s coil was clear of debris, and condenser fins were free of obstructions, allowing for efficient heat transfer.
This type of maintenance service can significantly extend the lifespan of a rooftop unit while improving indoor comfort and system reliability. Regular inspections also help reduce energy consumption by keeping the system running efficiently.
