For this service call, our Fast Affordable Air technician worked on a rooftop Lennox package unit. This type of HVAC system sits on the roof and holds the cooling parts and the fan in one big cabinet. The goal was to get the air conditioning cooling strong again and keep the unit running safely and smoothly in the Las Vegas area.
If a rooftop AC stops cooling well, one common reason is an electrical part that helps the motors start and run. That part is called a capacitor. A capacitor is like a small “battery helper” that gives a motor an extra push to start, then helps it keep spinning at the right speed.
What We Saw on the Roof
Photo 1 shows the top fan area and fan guard. The fan is what pulls outdoor air through the condenser coil so heat can leave the system. Any buildup, damage, or airflow trouble in this area can make the central AC run hotter than it should.
Photo 2 shows the full rooftop unit. You can see it is mounted on a shingle roof and has the Lennox data plate on the side. Rooftop equipment needs extra care because it sits in full sun, wind, and dust. That outdoor exposure can speed up wear on electrical parts.
Photo 3 shows the electrical compartment where a capacitor was mounted. The capacitor in this photo looks secured in a temporary way. When capacitors get weak, you may see hard starts, a fan that struggles to spin, or a compressor that will not start at all.
The Part We Replaced
Photo 6 is a close-up of the capacitor label. It shows a dual-run capacitor rated 60 + 7.5 MFD and 440/370 VAC.
- Dual-run capacitor means one can helps two motors, usually the compressor and the condenser fan motor.
- MFD (also written as µF) is the size rating of the capacitor. It must match the system needs.
- VAC is the voltage rating. Using the correct voltage rating helps reliability and safety.
When replacing a capacitor, the most important rule is matching the ratings. If the MFD is wrong, the motor can run hot, run weak, or fail early. If the voltage rating is too low, the capacitor can fail fast.
Fan Motor and Airflow Checks
Photo 4 and Photo 5 show the condenser fan motor area and mounting hardware. Outdoor fan motors live in heat and weather, so it is normal to see dirt and signs of age. Our technician checked the fan motor condition, the bracket, and the fan area to make sure nothing was rubbing, loose, or blocked.
Photo 7 shows the unit with a panel open during service. Opening the panel lets us safely access the electrical parts for testing and replacement. On rooftop systems, we also look for wiring that could rub on metal edges and make shorts later.
Temperature Check for System Health
Photo 8 shows an infrared thermometer reading about 159.6°F. Temperature checks are a quick way to see how heat is moving through the system. For example, the technician may check a hot discharge line or other hot-side components while the air conditioner is running. If the system cannot throw heat outside, temperatures can climb and the system may shut down on safety.
In simple terms, an AC is a heat mover. It pulls heat from inside the home and dumps that heat outside. Good airflow across the outdoor coil and strong electrical performance help that heat move out fast.
