AC Repair Project – R-410A Pressure Diagnostics and System Optimization

Fast Affordable Air recently completed a comprehensive air conditioning repair and performance optimization for a residential central cooling system in Clark County. The project involved detailed refrigerant pressure diagnostics, attic unit inspection, and verification of airflow and duct integrity. The client’s home featured a Rheem central AC system with an attic-mounted air handler and an outdoor condensing unit charged with R-410A refrigerant.

Initial System Check

We began by connecting Yellow Jacket digital manifold gauges to the outdoor condenser to measure refrigerant pressures. The first readings showed the low side (suction pressure) at approximately 266.9 PSI with a corresponding temperature of 84.8°F, and the high side (liquid pressure) at 271.9 PSI at 85.9°F. These near-balanced readings indicated the system was off during static pressure measurement, a baseline check before running diagnostics.

Running Pressure and Performance Testing

After the initial static check, we powered the system on for operational testing. With the compressor and blower running, our gauges displayed a low side pressure of 110.6 PSI at 33°F and a high side pressure of 327.5 PSI at 99.2°F. For R-410A, these readings aligned with expected pressures for the outdoor temperature at the time, confirming that the refrigerant charge was within the optimal range. Proper charge ensures that the AC can efficiently remove heat from the indoor air and reject it outside.

Attic Air Handler Inspection

The attic-mounted air handler was accessed to check the blower assembly, evaporator coil housing, and duct connections. The attic HVAC unit had tightly sealed foil-backed insulation on the cabinet and mastic-sealed duct joints. All electrical connections were intact, and condensate drainage lines were clear. Proper sealing prevents air leaks that can waste energy and reduce cooling efficiency.

Ductwork and Airflow

We inspected both the large main supply duct and the return air duct. The black flexible ductwork was intact, and the metal transition ducts were securely strapped to framing members. This ensures stable airflow delivery, reducing static pressure loss and improving comfort throughout the home.

Outdoor Unit Condition

The outdoor condenser was in good physical condition with no bent coil fins or visible refrigerant leaks. Electrical components, including the disconnect box, were tested for proper voltage supply. The refrigerant lines were insulated to minimize heat gain, preserving cooling capacity during operation.
