Diagnosing and Repairing a Central Air Conditioning System in Las Vegas

At Fast Affordable Air, we recently responded to a service call in Las Vegas for a central AC unit that was struggling to cool properly. The customer reported warm airflow and increased energy bills—two classic symptoms of a system that needed attention.

Initial Inspection and Gauge Diagnostics

Our technician began by attaching Yellow Jacket digital manifold gauges to the outdoor condenser. The system was running on R-410A refrigerant. The initial pressure readings showed:

  • Low side (suction pressure): ~120 psi
  • High side (discharge pressure): ~320 psi

These readings suggested the system was operational but likely underperforming due to electrical or airflow-related issues. We continued our investigation to pinpoint the cause.

Electrical Component Testing

Next, we opened the control panel and examined the dual-run capacitor. Over time, capacitors can weaken or fail completely, preventing the compressor or fan motor from starting properly. In this case, the capacitor was found out of spec and was replaced with a SUPCO hard start kit. This helps the compressor start more easily and prolongs its life.

For those unfamiliar, a hard start kit is a capacitor booster that gives the compressor an extra jolt of energy during startup—sort of like a turbo button for your AC. It’s especially helpful in the Las Vegas heat, where compressors experience heavy strain during triple-digit days.

Indoor Air Handler and Coil Inspection

We proceeded into the attic to inspect the furnace and evaporator coil. The coil was visibly sweating and the blower compartment had some debris buildup. The electrical wiring was intact, but the unit showed signs of wear from high attic temperatures and age.

We ensured the condensate drain line was flowing properly and no water was backing up into the secondary drain pan—a common issue in attic installs.

Final Pressure and System Check

After replacing the capacitor and cleaning the indoor unit, we rechecked refrigerant pressures. This time, our manifold readings settled around:

  • Low side: 225 psi
  • High side: 225 psi

This balance confirmed the compressor was now drawing correctly and refrigerant flow was normal.

System Performance and Cooling Benefit

The air conditioner is now running smoothly and efficiently. The homeowner noticed colder air from the vents within 10 minutes of powering the system back on. By correcting the electrical fault and inspecting both ends of the system, we restored full cooling operation while helping prevent future compressor stress and system failure.

This repair not only brought comfort back into the home, but also helped reduce energy consumption. A failing capacitor can cause the system to overwork and spike energy usage—something especially costly during Las Vegas summers.
