Our team at Fast Affordable Air was recently called out to a home in Las Vegas to diagnose and service a Lennox heating and cooling system. The customer reported poor cooling and suspected their system wasn’t running at full capacity. Once we arrived, we began a full inspection from the outdoor condenser to the attic-installed furnace and evaporator coil.
Step 1: Outdoor Condenser Inspection
We started at the central AC condenser unit, which is responsible for releasing the heat absorbed from inside the home. Our technician connected a Yellow Jacket digital manifold gauge to check the refrigerant pressures. The readings came out as follows:
- Low side (suction) pressure: 105.7 psi
- High side (discharge) pressure: 219.6 psi
These values indicated the system was undercharged and not cooling efficiently. Since the unit uses R-410A refrigerant, these pressures were below optimal range for a hot Las Vegas day. We added refrigerant to bring the system into proper balance.
Step 2: Attic Furnace and Evaporator Coil Inspection
Next, we went up into the attic to inspect the Lennox gas furnace and connected evaporator coil. This part of the HVAC system handles indoor air circulation and cooling. We checked for common problems like:
- Dirty or frozen evaporator coils
- Loose or exposed wiring
- Condensate drainage issues
The system showed signs of wear, but no major clogs or drain leaks. However, there was visible dust buildup on the furnace and blower housing. We cleaned the unit interior and checked electrical connections. All safety switches and the flame sensor were functioning properly.
Step 3: Refrigerant Line & Duct Inspection
We inspected the copper refrigerant lines for insulation damage and verified there were no refrigerant leaks using an electronic leak detector. The lines were properly sealed and secured with foam insulation.
The attic also featured foil-wrapped insulated ductwork, which helps reduce energy loss and maintain consistent airflow. All duct joints were sealed with foil tape or mastic, ensuring no cold air escapes into the attic.
Step 4: System Operation and Final Testing
After recharging the refrigerant and cleaning the air handler components, we turned the system back on. The condenser and indoor blower motor kicked in smoothly. We monitored temperatures and pressure readings to confirm proper operation.
Once the supply air dropped below 55°F at the vent, the customer noticed a huge difference. We explained how the recharge and maintenance improved efficiency and cooling output.
Why Proper Refrigerant Level Matters
When a central cooling system is low on refrigerant, it can’t absorb enough heat from inside your home. This makes the unit work harder, use more electricity, and cool less effectively. Regular maintenance and refrigerant level checks help keep your system running like it should—especially during Las Vegas summers.
